Canadian Economy Rebounds: Is a Recession on the Horizon? (2026)

The Canadian economy has demonstrated resilience, bouncing back from a winter lull and dispelling recession fears. Real GDP surged by 0.5% in April, with preliminary estimates suggesting a further 0.1% gain in May, pointing towards annualized growth exceeding 2% in the second quarter. This recovery comes after a year of stagnation, primarily due to the impact of U.S. tariffs on export sectors and dampened business investment and hiring. Despite the rebound, the economy remains vulnerable to headwinds, particularly from trade negotiations and the uncertain future of the USMCA trade pact.

The rebound in April was led by the oil and gas sector, which contributed significantly to the overall GDP gain, though this was expected due to industry-specific challenges in March. However, the magnitude of the bounce-back was surprising, potentially driven by higher oil prices resulting from Middle Eastern conflicts. Fourteen out of twenty industries experienced growth in April, including construction and manufacturing, despite the lingering uncertainty surrounding the USMCA negotiations.

Economists remain cautious, emphasizing the importance of business investment recovery for sustained growth. Stéfane Marion, chief economist at National Bank, highlights the need for a trade deal to revive business investment, which is currently missing from the Canadian economy. The Bank of Canada's interest rate decisions, currently at 2.25%, will be crucial in shaping the economic outlook, with market expectations suggesting a potential rate hike by December.

While the economy is not in recession, it is still at a critical juncture. Monthly GDP measurements, which focus on industry output, may not fully capture the economic health, as quarterly GDP by expenditure provides a more comprehensive view. Indicators such as employment, consumer spending, and home resales are also showing positive signs of growth. However, the economy's trajectory remains uncertain, and the Bank of Canada's decisions will play a pivotal role in determining its future path.
